Courses, training and events

 Welcome to Match/SaturDADS
CORNWALL

Courses available to all Saturdads (members and non members)

courses for the parents and their children that you work with in the Redruth North and Pengegon areas.

We are looking to book in either a 1-day course for parents or a 1-day course for parents and their children (10 years old and over). Obviously if you have a great amount of interest in these courses we can look at booking in extra courses.

A rough overview of the course is as follows:

-         Kit Issue (helmets, tunic, leggings, boots and gloves)

-         Marching

-         Hose Running

-         Search and Rescue Techniques

-         Hydrant Drill

-         Breathing Apparatus Drill

-         Problem Solving

-         Fire Safety Talk

The emphasis on the work that we do on the day is all about improving teamwork and communication skills, whilst also enhancing self-esteem and aspirations.

The courses will be held at Redruth Fire Station and we usually run them between 09:30 and 14:30, however we can be slightly flexible with these times to suit the participants. We require between 6 – 10 participants per course and ask that there be roughly a 50/50 split on the parent/child course.

Brook/Royal College of Midwives: Midwives, young fathers, young mothers

The limited literature suggests that young fathers are often excluded from ante-natal and post-natal care by the professionals involved. Brook (in partnership with the Royal College of Midwives) is conducting a research project to identify what really goes on between midwives and young fathers, in order to inform the production of new training materials and information sheets. The researchers are looking to interview the following:

• Young men (21 years and under) who have become fathers in the last year
• Young couples who have become parents in the last year (young fathers 21 years and under);
• Specialist midwives who work only with young parents
• Generic midwives who see young parents as part of their daily work

All interviews (by phone or in person) will last about an hour and will be recorded. Complete confidentiality is guaranteed, with the usual exceptions of information that raises concerns about safety. To register interest in taking part, please contact Trefor Lloyd, tel: 0207 732 9409 / 0778 878 1759.

University of London: Professionals working with young dads

The Thomas Coram Research Unit, Institute of Education, University of London wants to find out about what fatherhood means to young men, what factors help and hinder their involvement in bringing up their children, and how services might better support them. Three study sites across England will be chosen in liaison with practitioners who have provided services to young fathers (and fathers to be), to identify 54 young men in total. The researchers want to interview the young men, a ‘significant other’ (who has supported them in their fathering role) nominated by each young man; and key professionals. (Confidential) interviews will last about an hour.

If you think your site could be one of the three chosen, contact Elaine Chase or Ian Warwick at the Thomas Coram Research Unit.

City University (London): Men who have used psychological (counselling) services

A chartered psychologist/PhD student is exploring men’s experiences of therapeutic psychological interventions within the NHS, the voluntary sector and private practice (including business and sports coaching) in order to better understand how future services may be adapted to meet men’s needs. The first phase of the project requires male participants (aged 18+) to take part in individual 40 minute confidential face to face interviews. For ethical reasons, the participants need to be recruited through a healthcare professional, who would have to be willing to refer them. Formal request and information letters are available. Fathers wanted for important survey...about dads' role in early labour

Once labour starts, it’s generally considered advisable for the mother to stay at home as long as possible: if she rushes into hospital early, more medical interventions during the birth usually follow.

Fathers are very important at this point: research by the University of Worcester found that they can be very influential as to whether mothers head straight for hospital or hang on at home.

This survey (which follows one carried out by these same researchers to look at women’s experiences of early labour) is designed to explore what fathers do during early labour, and how they experience that time.

The information gained from the survey should enable midwives to better understand how to help fathers and give them the best possible information.

It’s very important for the researchers to get a large response to their survey.  Otherwise the data analysis won’t be accurate or representative.  The survey is CONFIDENTIAL and ANONYMOUS.  So – PLEASE HELP!

To take part in the survey

FOR EVERYONE:  If you can’t contribute to this survey yourself, please pass it to a man who can . . .
